Artists of the Russian Emigration: Stepan Kolesnikov

Russian lyrical realism of the first half of the XX century

MOSCOW - MAY, 2008. At the 5th Moscow World Fine Art Fair (MWFAF) taking place from 27 May until 02 June Maricevic Fine Art will present a unique collection of works by the renowned Russian artist Stepan Kolesnikov, who moved to Yugoslavia after the revolution with the so called "first wave" of emigration. One of the favourite artists of the Russian emperor Nicolas II, Kolesnikov was acclaimed by the public and highly praised by his teachers in Imperial Academy of Arts - Ilya Repin and Vladimir Makovsky. Sadly, after the emigration he shared the destiny of many ?migr? artists - his name was forgotten in Russia and for many years was out of sight of Russian critics and art historians. For over a decade our gallery has been recovering Kolesnikov's works from all corners of the world and returning them back to Russia. Over the years we have also compiled an extensive archive which is a valuable part of the book about the artist we are currently preparing.

Stepan Kolesnikov was gifted with a bright individual style, standing out among the most prominent artists of his time. He left rich and diverse legacy and was equally skillful in genre and landscape as well as in graphic and painting techniques. In emigration he remained faithful to the Russian subjects with bright winter landscapes and colourful church festivities among his favourites. The lifetime achievement of this talented artist is undoubtedly an important page in the history of the Russian art of the XX century.

Along with the exhibition Maricevic Fine Art will also premiere a documentary film about Stepan Kolesnikov. Our stand will represent both Russian and Yugoslavian periods of Kolesnikov's career as well as rare family archive of the artist. The project dedicated to Kolesnikov coincides with the rising interest for masterpieces of Russian ?migr? art as a cultural and historical phenomenon and we are sure that our exhibition will be fully appreciated by art experts, important collectors and general public.
